The Fresh Prince of Namibian Comedy

2017 has been a remarkable year for Mark Kariahuua, a young talented comedian who does not shy away from the entertainment scene. Kariahuua indeed has made his mark this year and there seems to be no signs of him slowing down. One of his biggest highlight was his one man comedy show “The Fresh Prince of Okakarara Reloaded” held at the National Theatre of Namibia earlier this year. We got an opportunity to recap, unfold and catch up with Mark, the outstanding comedian.

When did you start doing comedy?

My whole life. I just never knew people could get a real audience or even be paid for it. But professionally about 19 or a 20 years old.

What’s the one thing that made you laugh this year?

My mom read somewhere how Usher, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and all these famous people had their moms managing their careers that’s how they made it. So she was convinced that she is gonna be my “momager.” I had a performance in Swakopmund and she kept yelling at everyone “My son is thirsty! Get him something to drink now” *face palm*

What do you love most about stand up comedy?

The connection you get with an audience and how you can change their day. Some people really need that bit of happiness to change the course of their day and it kinda feels like magic.

You are currently the biggest thing in Namibian comedy right now. How are you dealing with the pressure that comes with this level of celebrity?

Well, first of all… I’m not a celebrity, I’m a performance artist. I think because I’ve been doing this for years and it hasnt happened overnight I’m able to process it and I’m aware that this is a job just like any other, the only difference is that I’m doing mine on a public level. Furthermore, I’m very realistic and real. I’m not really interested in industry parties, having famous friends etc. Everyone around me including my team is people I’ve known for years who know me for me and keep me grounded.

Why do you think you stand out from other comedians?

I’ve never really said this out loud but I think I’m just working hard man. I’m genuinely out working myself. I’m pretty sure there’s someone funnier than me but I’m just working like a machine. I’m 27 now, I told myself I need to work non stop in my 20’s. After 30 I’m doing something bigger then this. Watch this space.

Who inspires you?

Preachers. I love how these guys can command an audience every Sunday with new material. And they are so funny but they are well polished and they don’t swear. I like that. That made me simmer down on using the F-Word too.

What comedians inspires you?

I really model my career on Steve Harvey and Eddie Murphy. I’ve always been a fan of looking clean, being charming and being a G! I want that. Locally the guys and girls from Free Your Mind. Slick & Chicken really groomed us for this and it takes hard work. Also Neville Basson. He’s genuinely funny and he always gives sound advice. When I heard he was at my show this year I nearly shit myself.

What do you do for fun?

I like to play basketball every now and then, I enjoy horse riding and I like to hang out with my family. I’m the youngest so I like to be with them cause they older then me and authentic.

Most overhyped event of the year?

Hurricane Dineo. Muatje what happened? Flop!

Celebrity crush?

Meriam Kaxuxuena. She’s so funny I don’t know why she doesn’t do stand up. Ayo, Meriam what’s good?

Biggest lesson of the year?

You can’t change people or their opinions. Drink water and mind your own business.

Album of year?

Ovi Trap Chief

Favorite video of the year?

I like great art direction and visuals that come to life. N.E.R.D 1000 and KP Illest Okay Okay.

What do you think of comedy in Namibia?

It’s growing and we are putting in the work. We don’t have the luxury of lipsyncing, repeating jokes etc. All we do is use our voice and perform at our best. However as it’s still growing it would be nice to get more investment. Not even necessarily money, even mentorship from people who’ve been doing it for decades. Just to give back.

Plans for 2018?

We have a few things outlined already. It’s just gonna be a year of more hard work and giving the people what they want.
