Rachel Shining Her Light
The International Day of the Girl Child is an annual event held across the world to promote awareness of the challenges that girls face around the world, as well as to recognize and reaffirm their achievements.
Michelle Obama, celebrated 18-year-old Namibian student Rachel Mbokoma through the #Dayofthegirl initiative..
In 2018 Rachel participated in the Pan-African youth leadership program and had to submit an essay on the changes she wants to see in her community. Rachel discussed starting a girls’ health club in her article. Rachel was accepted as one of the chosen participants for the Pan-African youth leaders program in early 2019. Prior to that, the Obama Foundation produced a documentary on Rachel’s life, which she was ecstatic to see come to fruition.
Michelle took to her Instagram to share a short caption entailing Rachel’s determination despite the obstacles she is facing and her beliefs saying, “Rachel is determined to finish her school because she believes that education can unlock doors for the entire family.”
Not to forget Rachel’s mentors at the physically active youth (P.A.Y), a recognized non-governmental organization that focuses on the healthy development of young people in low-income areas in Windhoek’s central district (Katutura). Rachel began participating in the program in 2017 and has remained a member ever since. We hope Rachel will continue to shine her light, grow and empower thousands of disadvantaged kids around the world.
