Kalux – A Rising Star

A fine young Otjiwarongo based Musician, Saggarias “Kalux” Karunga has just made a star out of himself. Originally hailing from the small town of Outjo in the Kunene Region, Kalux lived in the location called PoePoe where he first attended primary school. Kalux moved to the Damara location when he was in grade 2. Kalux speaks six languages that includes; English, Afrikaans, Oshiwambo, KhoeKhoegowab, Otjiherero and Kavango. He is the most multilingual artist in the country. Kalux attended Damara Primary school and later on a Herero school. He had a hodge-podge of cultural experiences which made a benefit in his livelihood. His mother is Half Himba and half Damara, while his father is half Owambo and half Angolan. He believes in culture, however he does not really know where he belongs but he claims to be only a Namibian.

African-Namibian roots Phenom, Kalux was first officially introduced to the music industry four years ago, his passion for music and entertainment did not really set him on fire at the beginning because he was only doing music for fun and he never thought of recording professionally. He got an inspiration from people around him and started to roll the ball.

“I have been playing music for a while before I started taking it serious, because at first it was just like a hobby. I didn’t know that I had a talent to sing and create music but I started realizing it when people would love my music and all that”

Kalux did not only end up a musician from the start, then boom! success, No!. Starting as an independent artist, Kalux faced a lot of challenges making his music a success, especially money wise. He had to pay for the studios and all also pay his dancers. He said he had to put in work because it’s the only thing he could do.  Because of his determination to make it he tried in some other forms of  entertainment and sport as well playing soccer. Success is not just a word to him, but he had a taste of it too.

Born of true Namibian descent in Outjo, Saggarias Karunga grew up between two worlds. Kalux couldn’t have come on the scene at a better time. As a new generation takes the reins, Namibian roots music is needed more than ever, to remind us of the troubled pathways of our own cultures.

Being an Afro-pop, Disco and R&B artist inspired by Brenda Falsie and Bob-Marley, Kalux’s sophomore albums delved further and casting an unfailing eye at the realities faced by people every day. His songs are fueled by his rich tenor vocals, Jazz-influenced instrumentation and beautiful understated banjo. Kalux’s captivating high energy performances transports to success. His blend musicianship, creativity and tradition combined with entertaining upbeat music, high energy with a feel good vibe and lots of good-natured fun.

He earns the best new comer and best R&B award in 2016 as his concept album weaves between hard-hitting and love songs that touch on modern issues and more personal narrative speaking to love and culture. The “Superstar” won a Nama’s 2018 best male artist of the year. Winning best male artist of the year, Kalux said “Being realistic I have been putting in work, I wasn’t really surprised because I had too much faith, because I believe that once you work hard you will get a reward”.

Kalux concluded that; “I am greatly honored by the reward for my work and I believe that I worked hard and I feel blessed. It doesn’t matter how long it takes but once you believe in yourself and pray, anything is possible. The 2018 Nama’s artist of the year star is working on his next album.
