JBLACK: Namibia’s Hip-Hop Underdog

Jamie, popularly known as JBlack is inarguably one of the best rappers on the scene right now. The opinionated artists and Swapo Colours hit maker took time out to chat with us about his music career and personal life.

JBlack who is currently working on his album titled “Talk Of The City” promises that it will be exactly that, the talk of the city. When asked about his latest hit single Swapo Colours and its affiliation to politics, he very clearly responds that it is not a political affiliation song, this is also clarified in the lyrics of the
song.

The young rap star is currently not signed to any record label and says that the only label he would sign to if he should ever consider it, would be Mshasho Records. He goes on to further say that other record labels have unhappy clients and would never sign with them. This, he says, causes a lot of artist frustration due to a lack of opportunities and the monopolisation by the older and bigger artists, hence why artists are making music that more appealing to the international audience. He says that it is ridiculous as one abandons the Namibian sound, an example of that being Desmond who raps in Nigerian slang instead of Namibian.

When asked who he considers as competition in the industry right now, J says that he only sees Kanibal as competition and the only artist who does Hip-Hop the way it should be done. He further calls out Get Lich for disrespecting the culture and says that his fans are also a disrespect to Hip-Hop by merely supporting him. JBlack says “Hip Hop is about words, words Get Lich is not even able to articulate.” On his personal life, JBlack who came out of a relationship with the popular songbird Adora after she supposedly cheated on him says he is finally ready for love.
