Album Review
DJ Dreas takes on summer and it is Tangerine
House music producer DJ Dreas is a talent that keeps giving musically. Having blessed us with his vision of Pluto in 2018, this time the house music DJ and producer has created a new feel, sound and look for summer which has been taking local and international music lovers to very different and uniquely sounding sonic landscapes of late, painting the town ‘Tangerine’ in the process – the name of his EP that dropped on 12 December 2019.
Dreas whose full name is Ngula Andreas Nambambi is one of Namibia’s fastest rising stars setting himself apart with his unique take on music in Namibia. The 21 year old DJ earlier this year had an opportunity to work with Red Bull Studios Cape Town, where most of his album was created. “I hadn’t released music in a long time so I used the opportunity I got with the Red Bull Studios to put out some fresh sounds. Everything was created at once and that makes it special,” he said.
DJ Dreas’ relaxed and refined chill vibe style remains present in Tangerine and says the EP is all his work, trying to remain as un- influenced as possible as he is in the space of trying to find and stay true to his sound and take on music.
Released under Namibian based indie record label Universal Master Builders Academy, 7 track Tangerine is currently on all major online stores with a limited number of physical copies. The EP features vocals of South African native Akeeda and Namibian Neo-soul singer/label mate Diolini. Song titles such as ‘A Polaroid Story’, ‘Deepcentric’, ‘Seasons’ and ‘Love Fiend’ make for the most relaxing and well balanced sonic experience on the ears. Indeed there is something about DJ Dreas that is indescribably different, something many artists spend lifetimes searching for- the place where feel-good music meets energetic social commentary and that is what this ground breaking body of work is.
