Bertholdt Serves Some Medicine

When it comes to the greatest vocalists and lyricists, Bertholdt Mbinda is inarguably topping the ranks. Bertholdt who has been away from the spotlight or a while now says that he might not have been on stages and releasing contents as a performer, but he has definitely been busy with other aspects of music. The RnB GOAT has been grooming and nurturing up and coming artists from the likes of Doris, Anne Singer and Get Lich. Bertholdt who is  a writer and producer, is also a voice coach.

We set down with him to discuss his music and catch up on everything Bertholdt. With his last album “medicine” that was released almost two years ago, we are definitely getting a feel of the good ol’ music we are used to from the award winning artist.

When asked about the RnB genre and how it is doing, he says that “we are still testing the waters and we still need to find ourselves and our sound as a genre and as a country.” He says that with new prospective RnB artists, they seem to fall short when it comes to vocals, control, pitch and generally being captivating. He says that the genre has definitely not gotten better, there lacks originality and there is a need to go back to the drawing board.

About his album “Medicine” the 18 track album took 5 producers to finish, featured artists like The Dogg, DJay, Chikune and Desmond and the late Catty Catt. Not only is the album soulful but has some bangers too, our fave being “Ti Xuro” where he features Boli Mootseng and Loxer; the club banger which has a Nama step feel definitely gets Bertholdt out of his comfort zone as he tries and amazingly kills the southern inspired sound. But you definitely find the more soulful songs like “Disaster to Myself” where he talks about how kind hearted he is and how people tend to take advantage of that kindness, which so many people relate to.

Any upcoming performances or projects; Bertholdt who was featured on DNaff’s new album track 9 says that he is focusing on creating business partnerships now and growing as a brand, but will definitely keep us updated on any plans.

CANDID WITH BERTHOLT:

• What is your opinion on lyrical value in the industry: I definitely think I am the best lyricist right now, artists like The Dogg and Kalux; I think are great performers; I don’t think however that in terms of lyrical content they are as strong.
• Most difficult person to work with: Get Lich, difficult in a sense that the communication barrier sets one back immensely, but also because he requires a lot of work repetitively. I think though that he is one of the most humble artists and really appreciates the work I do for him.
• What’s Bertholdt’s relationship status: I have been with “THE ONE” for two years and a couple of months now, recently got engaged and I plan on settling down soon. She is amazing, risky, smart, beautiful, bossy and really private.
